Modder, programmer, and all around tinkerer. Yes, I’m that New Vegas and Deus Ex guy.
You can also find me over at lemmy.sdf.org under the same username. Also kbin.social if it ever comes back from the dead.
Plenty of other great launchers mentioned (Projectivy is damn good) but I thought I’d put in a vote for FLauncher. It’s blood simple: here’s a screen listing your apps. THE END.
You can change the background wallpaper, make different sections for different apps, hide/show specific apps and sort them as you will, but that is it. Perfect if you only plan to go back to the home menu when you’re switching between apps (like me).
Yeah, fair. That’s how I feel about most of my devices. If I don’t have root access at a minimum I don’t feel comfortable.
Even for the units you can’t install a CFW on though you can still get in via ADB and exercise a lot of control. You can’t run apps as root but you can disable and purge any of the even remotely undesirable apps and block any of the paths used for forced updates and the like.
Android TV boxes are the way to go IMO. Lots of replacement launchers and ways to remove all the baked-in ads and the like, even if you can’t root the device.
If you’re stateside, Walmart’s ONN brand devices are the absolute best bang for your buck you can find. They’re not locked down, so you’re able to get into the proper Android system menu and disable apps and so on (including telemetry). You can even activate ADB and tinker that way, though you don’t need to if you just want to install a more simple (read: ad-free) home screen and turn off all the tracking garbage.
The fact that Mbin doesn’t even get a mention in this question tells me a lot. T_T
Anyway, the overall activity level seems to have dropped off a bit since the initial burst during the Reddit API debacle. Activity seems to be clustered around a handful of large instances. Within that though it’s solid and steady.
I’d say Iran’s leaders are correct.
How fucked are we that Iran is the sane and reasonable one in this conflict?
It’s basically all of those things, but also that a newer technology doesn’t necessarily mean the older technology has no use. People still use bicycles even though cars and motorcycles exist. People still read books even though audiobooks and TV shows exist. The number of people doing those things may have gone down, but they have a specific use case and need that the “better” technology doesn’t satisfy.
On the other side, there are technologies that get entirely replaced by the successor. because it’s just flatly better even in the same scenarios. 8-Tracks being made completely irrelevant by Cassettes, for example.
Mostly it’s two things:
COBOL is very good at some specific things that other languages can’t do as well. Not that other languages do them badly, not at all, but COBOL is absurdly efficient for certain operations. You need to do basic math operations on millions of rows of data every minute? COBOL can do that easily. Many other languages can get close to that speed - maybe a few seconds off - but COBOL is often used in environments where a hundred millisecond delay can mean everything breaks. Are there other languages which can match that speed? Absolutely. Are they any of the languages every company wants to upgrade to? No.
COBOL’s best practices are sometimes the literal opposite of what every other language expects, especially when it comes to optimizing code for efficiency. You ever seen Evaluate, COBOL’s equivalent of a switch statement? Rather than being used to Evaluate a variable to check its values, its most commonly used to “EVALUATE TRUE” and then use the WHEN clauses (basically case statements) to check statements or variables that you want to be true. That can be converted to another language directly, yes, but it absolutely will not be efficient best-practices code. Most likely you’re going to need someone - not an AI, not an automated process - to do one-off rewrites to keep the code performance the same. As it is I have never seen any automated tool (LLM or otherwise) convert COBOL without falling victim to this issue.
There’s also a third issue in that COBOL has some specific minor capabilities that other languages just do NOT, or not to the level of flexibility and efficiency COBOL has. The most common one is COBOL’s “88” picture type (variable) definitions. Think of it like being able to set an automatic evaluation on a variable that returns true if the condition is met, e.g. the variable “05 WS-ERROR-STAT PIC X.” with an 88 of “88 FATAL-ERROR VALUE ‘F’.” would mean you could check “FATAL-ERROR” anywhere in your code to see if the value of WS-ERROR-STAT has been set to “F”. The thing is, this is done basically for free (resource wise) as part of allocation, and furthermore it can be used to get or set, i.e. “SET FATAL-ERROR TO TRUE” will change the value of WS-ERROR-STAT to “F”. You can also use 88s for ranges, e.g. “88 ANY-ERROR VALUES ‘F’ THRU ‘N’.”, though you can’t use them for set operations that way.
Bottom line: there’s nothing that perfectly recreates its efficiency, the specific way it performs efficiently, and some of its more esoteric capabilities. Anything still running COBOL probably depends HEAVILY on one or all of these things.
When I first saw this comic I was a relatively new COBOL programmer. It felt accurate.
I am now my employer’s senior COBOL dev. It still feels accurate.
The one on Jamaica Avenue?
They actually did XKCD 221. What the hell?
That’s so absurdly simple it almost sounds like a joke, except I’m salivating thinking about it. Neat.
Annnnnnnnd this is my new forever name for it.
VPN. End of thread.
Even if you were living on your own you should only be torrenting through a VPN.
Despite the apparent speed of advances, AI is a technology that is still in its childhood. It’s as if tech companies found a way to create a 6-year-old out of GPUs and way too goddamn much electricity. If you can overlook the resource usage required, that’s kind of cool.
The problem is that those same tech companies (and some governments) have decided that they all need their own synthetically created 6-year-old and that they should give it unlimited funding and the ability to make life-changing decisions for everyone else, and anyone who isn’t jumping at the chance to have their life overseen by a machine-generated child with poor impulse control and a propensity to hallucinate is just “getting in the way of progress”.
That movie is so damn good. Every other film adapting a comic book has to make it either an origin story or some major event in canon. Dredd is literally “this is a slightly unusual but not that abnormal day for this guy” and it’s absolutely riveting. And that’s how the Dredd universe is: everything is intense and over-the-top.
Same. As far as I’m concerned that film is a depiction of what happens if you enter The Warp without a Gellar Field.
When I first saw the movie I was very unhappy because it was not at all what was advertised. I was expecting a sci-fi thriller, not Hellraiser in Space. It was quite badly marketed. If it had been marketed correctly it might’ve done far better.
I mean this positively: current AIs come up with the most bizarre, insane shit. Sometimes that’s great: a new approach or perspective when trying to solve a problem or interpret data can be exactly what is required to actually accomplish the task. Other times it’s unhelpful, but often so unhelpful it can be hilarious if the stakes are low-to-nonexistent.
That said, that’s exactly why they need to not be as ever-present as they are: by human standards they are literally insane, incapable of consistent reasoning and frequently perceiving the world in ways that do not match reality. It’s not accurate to say the technology is in its infancy, but at best it’s in its adolescence, and just like an 8-year-old it should not be put in charge of dangerous things like drone strikes or ambulance dispatch.
Modding Bethesda’s Gamebryo engine games, especially Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, and especially doing so using only the built-in functions, i.e. no FOSE/NVSE. Not that I’m averse to using them, but I prefer to do what I can without them before I do. Thanks to that approach I had little trouble making Fallout 4 mods that could run on console editions of the game.
It was simple once I figured out what I needed, but I had to cycle through a few different OSes before I got something that worked with my hardware. You might have luck with a “specifically for emulation” build like Lakka or Batocera, but for me I wound up installing Debian 12 and then having it just auto-login and run RetroPie on start. Works great though.
Anywho, best of luck!
It’s less than a week after one of the most consequential and unexpected midterm elections in US history. Some people are gonna be keyed up. Even if it was a normal midterm election people would be keyed up.
Expected seasonal blip, basically.
