I live in an area with extreme high homeless population but we’ve all noticed over the past year that homeless people who had become familiar faces for years, are no longer there. They’re simply gone. Many of us speculate there is an unpublicized “ICE” type of program but directed at the homeless, the homeless are abducted by appointed govt workers and taken to another location and goodness knows where that other location is or if they’re even still alive much longer after being taken off the streets. But lemme tell ya the streets at night have been a lot emptier & quieter the past year. 😐

But there are “for-profit prisons,” I personally am not sure how that functions, but also the inmates are required to have a job in the prison earning just a few insulting pennies per day, becoming useful to society making license plates or whatever the heck labor they make prisoners do.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK that a general strike is one of the most effective ways to push for change. There is a general strike in the works across the US for this Friday.
2·4 days agoThe reality for most people is if we went on strike we would be the only one at our job to do it and we would be reprimanded or fired.
We all live paycheck to paycheck and if we miss a day of work then we don’t get paid and we can’t pay our bills and we die.
And that’s why they can’t be friends. Squirrels steal bird food which makes Birds angry so they peck the squirrel to death.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•When someone's telling you something in great detail that you already know about, do you: A) patiently listen and let them finish?
4·6 days agoThey’re looking at you like you’re stupid, they’re speaking condescendingly, and they’re telling you the whole thing when you could tell it better, because you didn’t just study it in books, you have lived it & experienced it & practiced it repeatedly.
😂 How patient could you be in this situation?

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Weird Al's advice to a fan
10·9 days agoit’s insane that in his decades-long career, no one has come remotely close to matching him
There are surely plenty of other people out there who have similar humor & talent & charisma & intelligence & musical panache and are able to put it all together in brilliant art, but you know how the musical industry is rigged, weird Al slipped in during the late 1970’s at a fortuitous time before the music industry became rigged & proprietary. He is indeed a national treasure.
There are billions of people all over the planet. Everyone has talents that most people will never see on a large scale via the media. Because the media is rigged & gatekeeper’ed these days.
I for one used to inadvertently entertain my family as I went about the household chores by singing well-known tunes but substituting the words for what’s going on in our daily lives and we all found it hilarious. That was kinda weird al-esque, he’s so relatable, we all have our quirks & sense of humor and he taps into something that we can all relate to.

4·9 days agoI had a morning like this. Everybody around me was being hostile toward me and each other for seemingly no reason at all. The first two people I woke up to were hostile to me. And it continued throughout the day. It was ridiculous. I’m glad I could make the decision about noon to retreat into my own world and shut everybody else out for the rest of the day.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you think standard batteries like A, AA, AAA, C, and D, 9V etc will eventually become obsolete?
2·10 days agoWow, why did this old post resurface? Two people just commented on it.
If this is true, OOP probably had some long unresolved trauma and/or underlying guilt religious indoctrination or obesity, low self-esteem or depression or something similar holding him back for that long. Not sure if this greentext was a word-for-word quoted conversation between a real-life patient & therapist, but if so, that therapist’s credentials need to be revoked. More likely the conversation was an imaginary one from some OOP’s lazy self-deprecating imagination.
Yeah even I’m a beautiful girl and I was just laying here an hour ago thinking how much I want to have sex right now but the problem is when there’s nobody compatible around to have sex with. That’s the problem.
Edit: added the word compatible.
People generally stop worrying about such things at some point, especially when they are in a position to follow their hobbies and passions & make satisfying progress & contributions through whatever they’re passionate about. That’s the meaning of life right there.

One problem with giving homeless people free homes is that everyone else will start to wonder why the hell we’re working so hard for 90% of our income being taken by landlords or mortgage companies, when we could simply stop working so hard, become homeless, and get a free home. ⁉️
