Science@beehaw.org•New York Startup Builds Fridge-Sized Machine That Can Turn Air Into Gasoline
2·12 days agoBattery performance quickly degrades in cold conditions. In the Arctic circle, you could have lots of sun during the summer but it still wouldn’t make sense to deploy batteries. The people who live there are already dependent on gasoline.

Solar to gas, not grid to gas. Gasoline is easier to store and transport than batteries. There are places that batteries don’t make sense but still have lots of sun. I think this could be useful, and if it’s using CO2 from the atmosphere and solar power then it’s not contributing to global warming.

Green - An environmentalist community @lemmy.ml•Goodbye to the idea that solar panels “die” after 25 years. A new study says the warranty does not mark the end, and real-world performance can last for decades
3·15 days agoA good car comes with a 10 year warranty, but there are 20-30 year old cars on the road. Even older if you include collector classics.
Not sure where you’re based, but if you’re in the US and willing to travel to Portland, OR, Crary Shoes is one of the last remaining custom orthotic cobbler. It was about $1,500 for a pair of custom shoes, but they should last for a lifetime with proper care and occasional resoleing.
