❗️Ireland national football team stages Gaza protest, ‘snubs’ Israeli team

    • The UEFA Nations League B match between Ireland and Israel last night was marked by protests over the genocide in Gaza.

    • Ireland goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu boycotted the match over Gaza, while the Irish players who took the field also staged visible protests.

    • Wearing black armbands in memory of Palestinians killed in Gaza, the Irish squad bowed their heads during the Israeli national anthem.

    • Republic of Ireland captain Dara O’Shea did not shake hands with Israel captain Manor Solomon, and the customary exchange of pennants between the captains did not take place.

    • No official team photo was taken before the match.

    • After scoring Ireland’s third goal, Jack Moylan removed his black armband and kissed it in tribute.

    • The match, played in Hungary, ended 3-0 in Ireland’s favor after they scored all three goals within the opening 12 minutes of the first half.

    • After the match, Republic of Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrímsson said his players had raised awareness around the world.

Wearing black armbands in memory of Palestinians killed in Gaza

Importantly, they themselves said that it was for “all life lost” and not specifically Palestinians in Gaza.

        Unfortunate.

I was already of the opinion that engaging with the game itself against the Zionist entity was a bad decision.

          It is fairly disappointing.

Speaking as an Irish football fan. FIFA, UEFA, the Irish Government, the FAI, and lastly the team’s management let us down. They shouldn’t have left it to the actual footballers who generally have the political instincts of sixth formers.

Sounds like what they did was performative and empty in order to please the capitalists who make money and give them their paychecks, while also trying to look like they care about social issues. We’ve seen this kind of crap with Black Lives Matter in the US in the past.
