i wear my Free Palestine shirts on the weekends mostly out of habit now. I often forget about it once we’re out doing our errands but lately people have been much more outspoken in their support.
Today a couple of young teen girls came up to me while we were buying some fruit at the farmer’s market and said “Free Palestine! Great shirt!” I fist bumped them and said it’s always nice to see when other people also support Palestine.
They said “you’re brave for wearing that” which is a somewhat common thing people say to me when they actually stop to talk. I told them nobody ever harasses me for it. Most people voice their support if anything. Those who don’t agree will give a stinkeye but they never say anything.
They were shocked to hear that and said they’re going to go out and hit some shirts right away because more people need to voice their support loudly. I agree, we need people to realize there are far more of us than it seems.
They also told me they know there is a lot of support in their generation because they see it on TikTok all the time.
I didn’t say it, but I believe that’s a large part of the push to now ID everyone online.
The kids are alright!
My younger relative, whose not on social media mind you, loves to learn about flags and geography, and mentioned to me a few things about MLK. Obviously it was all sanitized and very basic, as they are not even in secondary school, but the interest in the subject did put a smile on my face.
Children and young adults are much sharper than we often give them credit for, so I’m actually quite hopeful of their development coming into this world.
Was learning about King Charles of England in the Civilizations Series podcast that was recommended to me. How it was king but with parliament of nobles and yet the king could kind of just be like “nah I don’t want to listen to parliament” and parliament couldn’t do much about it. And it doesn’t feel that distant from the modern day US if you replace “king” with “president” and “parliament” with “congress of capitalists.” If the president wants to do his own thing and congress doesn’t band together to stop it, the so-called “checks and balances” aren’t worth much.
It also reminds me of it in that, according to the history told in the podcast, most of parliament was in favor of having a constitutional monarchy. They just had problems with how King Charles was running things and ultimately brought it back after the civil war inducing problems with King Charles himself were resolved. Similar to how some members of congress might crow about Trump, but they’re not saying the system is bad and we need a different one, they just don’t like the way he’s doing things.
it’s truly a whole other world out there. the attention economy and the misanthropic nature of capitalism (and the constant infiltration of spaces by malfeasants and state actors) has made rotten american society and as such the anglosphere internet is hell on earth to be on.
Iran are out of the football world cup and I’m feeling sad. I wish they could’ve made it through as a statement about how they’ve been treated, but alas. I really hope some FA’s will side with Iran and point out how Iran’s team has been mistreated
We finally have somewhat of a cool breeze again. The heatwave is coming to an end and in a festive way it will end in a giant thunderstorm in a few hours.
It was the hottest period of time I ever experienced. I dealt with even higher temps before on holiday but nothing comes close to the ten days of suffocating heat of the last ten days. No AC, just rawdogging the heat and humidity. It was fucking awful but we made it. Fuck every single capitalist shithead for creating this.
On the one hand, having niche interests is fun because you get to be pretentious and have a monopoly of talking about said interests.
On the other hand, you share common interests with like 5 people, 4 of which are probably on a different continent, so it’s hard to make friends
So yknow how there’s an everything app like wechat? We should have an everything game that’s a combination of Conquest of elysium, dominion, dwarf fortress, and tales of maj’eyal. I’m sure this would be simple /s
Gotta love people coming out of the woodworks to say it is hot elsewhere too when referring to our heatwave in Europe. Yes, I know Texas and Arizona and Carolina are hot and humid. Good that you can handle it. The point is that it’s not supposed to hit 37 in inland The Netherlands and combined with 70-80+% humidity we are in actual danger. This country was not build to handle these temps for days on end because it is not supposed to be this warm yet every year for the last decade we keep shattering records.
Tens of thousands of people across the EU die every year because of increasing heat and adapting to it and improving our housing and whatnot is painfully slow and ridiculously expensive.
Solidarity from Italy. I don’t even want to imagine how it’s going to be like next year, or the one after that.
Some months ago the city cut down some trees in a street to make a useless turn around loop for our tram system. Years of protest were denied by then. The people living in the streets did not want this to happen. So eventually a big protest erupted and it turned violent because the police just knocked people down. One of our elected reps to the city was arrested and confined for over ten hours without being able to communicate to anyone what happened.
The trees are down now. One of the functions of trees in a city is to cool down the place. During the current heat wave, residents of the street measured a temperature increase between 7 to 13 degrees celsius compared to previous heat waves. They are now cooking in their appartments. The loop has not been build yet.
Said street:

Depressing as fuck
Glorious liberal democracy in action
🧱
story so depressing you cant think of a joke
If I’m going to hear one more person during this heatwave saying we as a country can’t fight global warming because CHINA IS PRODUCING MORE CO2 I will be violent. Please for the love of god use your two braincells to reason why China produces more.
do you think they know that China is also making all the solar panels
Have y’all ever been afraid of taking action? Reading about Fred Hampton doing all the stuff he did before he was 21 makes me think about how much I avoid doing stuff that I really need to do.
Sometimes yeah. Especially when police is involved. I remember just after october 7th when a hospital was bombed in Gaza, local activists wanted to just burn some candles on a square to remember them. I went there only to find out city forbid the gathering last minute. There were still like 30 of us there so we decided to have our moment anyway. Mind you this was just lighting candles and having a silent gathering, in the pouring rain no less. But cops showed up with dogs and sticks ready and were really intimidating. It’s hard not to get a bit scared in a situation like that.
At later protests cops actually turned violent which was also scary.
But ultimately I think about why I do it and that being scared is okay. As long as I still go, I can be scared, but I do what I need to do.
I can’t imagine what is like to face the cops. Really goes to show how basic organized empathy is still considered a threat. I don’t know what you thought during that moment, but thank you for doing what you have to do. I hope to have this courage as well.
In this interview Nick talks about his first serious confrontation at a protest. (13:49) The whole discussion was really good.

The Dutch state will introduce a law that makes glorifying terrorism illegal. Terrorism of course being whatever the fuck the right wing loonies in charges deem it to be.
Honestly, i don’t even know where my GF and I will be safer, staying here in the netherlands or go through with our plan of moving to spain😭
The dutch state is already fucked, but it seems like the far right is going to be elected in spain too.
The far right is going to be elected in every European country that doesn’t leave the EU and NATO, because as long as we are trapped in this neoliberal prison there is no way out of the trajectory of social and economic decline and rapidly worsening material conditions, the resulting frustrations of which will not be allowed by the EU and NATO to evolve into proletarian movements but will be redirected with all means available – propaganda, financial aid, state violence – into racism, xenophobia and militarism.
sigh yeah…you are right. I just wish for a safe space for my GF.
I wish i had more of a…fire within me, you know? That would make me capable of preparing for the inevitable and organize against it.
I was falsly hoping to have a safe environment for her if i can’t build it up with revolutionary effort. Simply protecting her won’t be enough in this world.
jesus christ the earthquake in venezuela was devastating
Our media are reporting 10 to 100k deaths which is insane
10 to 100k deaths
Yeah I’m not reading anything like that. I’m seeing dozens and hundreds injured.
Dutch media is still reporting it based off some US prediction method but it seems rather excessive for now
