I have lived there. I always found it exceptionally ugly from the outside. On the inside though - surprisingly full of light, gold and colors, all the way up to the very, very high ceiling. More gold in the basement iirc.
Well worth the €12 if you ask me.

Why not? If the majority of people now visit the cathedral for tourist reasons rather than to attend a service, then it might as well be treated as a tourist attraction - and, like most tourist attractions, they do cost money.
Should have introduced separate rates for EU citizens, non-EU Europeans, non-Europeans and a “fuck you in particular” rate for Americans (in response to the higher national park fees for foreigners in the US under Trump).
That’s illegal. You can’t discriminate based on citizenship if it’s another EEA county. You can’t even do “locals get it free, but all other countries pay the same rates”. But charging non-EEA residents a different price is allowed.
I believe you could get around that by giving out a free card to locals/all Germans/all Europeans that gives free access.
