      Lewis and Clark were both born in Virginia. They had probably seen black bears, which are like, half the size of a grizzly bear and a tenth of the temperament.

      Bears had long been extinct in most of Europe for a thousand years, so if they’d been Brits, they’d probably never have seen a bear at all, outside of a circus.
