Explanation: Amongst the Allies in WW2, both the Soviets and Americans had expensive-to-manufacture submachineguns for close-range combat. For the Soviets, it was the PPD; for the Americans, it was the Thompson Submachinegun.

The Brits made an ultra-cheap ultra-optimized steel tube that could inexplicably still fire rounds, despite being manufactured with only 5 man-hours of work per gun.

Eventually, both the Soviets and Americans would follow suit in seeking a ‘good enough’ SMG instead, with the Soviets adopting the PPSH-41, and the Americans the M3 Grease Gun.

Additional funny part: The US Army variant of the Thompson, the M1 submachine gun, was also a battle rifle and a carbine and a pistol and a tank and a WAS cost reduced compared to the traditional Chicago Typewriter. They simplified the foregrip, eliminated the barrel cooling vanes, simplified the rear sight, eliminated the provision for a drum magazine, and ditched that bullshit “blish lock” in favor of a straight-blowback design. And it still cost $Zimbabwe to manufacture.

As I said in NCD, I am but a humble reposter, not a meme maker! I am innocent, your honor! 😭

“Toob” is the American pronunciation of “tube”. Britons pronounce it as “tube” or “choob”.
