I think you can do it, but some people will struggle. As others have already mentioned, humans are social animals. Many studies conclude that social connection is one of the biggest factors that boosts well-being (https://hsph.harvard.edu/news/the-importance-of-connections-ways-to-live-a-longer-healthier-life/), this doesn’t necessarily mean that you should marry someone and become a social butterfly, it just means that you should avoid isolation for long periods of time.

The issue is: I don’t think people are bothered enough with commercial social media to the point of paying for an alternative. Think about it, even with the majority of Fedi instances being free to use, not many people stopped using Twitter/Reddit/Instagram. So I think Fedi instances need to be free to use while it’s small to attract new users.

Yes, we shouldn’t use privacy-invasive Google software, but if they make an ethical software/hardware, why shouldn’t we support it? I read a translation of Crime and Punishment which I think was made by an AI. There were a lot of weird structured sentences. Besides, the translation kept missing the characters’ genders. Like, a female character was constantly mentioned by male pronouns and so on.
