Or more computing skills. In grad school there were a number of Masters students from the local region in our cs program. The employers would pay for it for them.

Unfortunately our bodies make for pretty terrible batteries, but we’re pretty damn good at processing information in certain ways.

I’ve spent my entire career as a professor advocating that students should pick a minor, certificate, or double major if they’re capable.

My rationale is remarkably similar I think. Literally ever field, hobby, and area of study involve some form of technology. Many of those disciplines lack the sophistication of the tooling and that we have in more programming related fields, which makes people with an additional specialized skill set extremely valuable.

Hell, look around at fintech, bioinformatics, computational arts, etc. We have emerging Fields all the time that are essentially computer science combined with another field.

A lot of things seem trivial with 50+ years of hindsight.

Even then, most people right now still don’t grasp the nuances of the debates around machine intelligence that have been occurring for the past hundred years.

I have a litany of them and I’m much younger than my 50s. What I think it comes down to is to those produce a quality of life such that I would welcome non-existing. I’m not there and I hope not to be there for decades to come

It sounds like you have an issue with resilience. I hope very much for your sake that you acquire some of the same issues that those of us with long-term illnesses have so you can develop perspective.

For your average Joe, yes, that is how language does and always has worked. Their level of education, understanding of the subject matter, etc. will have a massive impact on how our words shape the world.

Outside of that context? No. Law, medicine, engineering, science, etc. still exist and the nature and meaning of our words will continue to be important.

It isn’t, though, despite popular conception among those who don’t understand computing.

Any attempt to legislate this shit must be crystal clear and leave no room for technological ambiguity.
