  • No it’s DM from people that are not in your friend list. I often receive scam messages on Discord and only notice them months latter.

The simple fact that they will be hidden deep in the inbox IMO is important. If a teen doesn’t see messages from strangers they had no prior contact with that’s good in my book.

I think it’s much better than just letting these nasty DMs stay in the dark anyway.

At least a teen will have to go out of his way and ignore the warnings to get in contact with some freak.

Also what better solution do you suggest to implement ?

  • So teen-per-default means that adults can freely talk to teens, which should be prevented.

    That’s not my understanding.

I get your point but by default if Discord thinks you are a teen it also implies all the limitations associated with that status. Which means some media will be blurred and some commands cannot be done.

An adult can keep his “teen default status” but he also keeps all the limitations associated with it. Which I suppose doesn’t mean they can “freely” talk to other accounts as you state.

Notably the DM that a groomer would send will end up in a special inbox for all teens or for that matter “default teen”.

  • Please read the Discord official post.

    one to access teen spaces,

That account will be tagged as a teen account until proven otherwise. Therefore any message or DM he will receive will go to a special inbox with most likely warnings to consult it.

Please, again, I understand that the pitchforks are out for discord, I’m just asking you to take the time to read the official discord post from top to bottom.

There will still be unknowns until they release the update but your question is already answered by their official post.

Basically, as long as an account hasn’t done an age verification it’s assumed to be a teen. And that means all the limitations attached to that. So you can create 10 accounts if you want either :

    • You have proven you are an adult on that account you remove the limitations to what you can do but your messages towards teen accounts will most likely go to that special inbox they mention. No clue exactly how hidden and how much warning are attached to that inbox.

    • You have no proven your age and your account is limited like any other teens account. You won’t be able to see “sensitive media” whatever Discord means by that I dont know.

What I really wonder is what they will allow in term of interactions between the two groups in details. They are very vague on many aspects of it.

But multiplying your accounts on discord doesn’t look like a valid workaround to their system.

  • Any source for this ?

The official announcement is quite vague and since the feature isn’t out it’s hard to know how it will work exactly.

Also, I assume the biggest risk isn’t for teens to send nudes “unprompted” but to let adults contact them and ask for them.

This for example is very vague :

Age-gated Spaces – Only users who are age-assured as adults will be able to access age-restricted channels, servers, and app commands.

So if a teen can only interact with other teens on dedicated spaces it should make it harder for perverts to ask for stuff.

And if an adult tries to pretend to be a teen he will only see blurred content ?

I’m sure many will think I’m trying to defend Discord on this but I’m not. Again we dont really know how this update will work. I’m just trying to make sure we dont spread misinformation.

There will be plenty of time to criticize Discord when they push this update.

What I’m sure of is that discord was definitely a platform of choice for many bad people to hunt and groom teens.

Personally, it’s the fact that discord says they will delete my verification data :

Identity documents submitted to our vendor partners are deleted quickly— in most cases, immediately after age confirmation.

In most cases ? Really ? Is that supposed to look trustworthy ?

  • I concur with others that your question depends a lot on where you live.

In my country if I take a “seedbox” in a datacenters I’m pretty much safe to pirate. The copyright holders don’t bother with that.

On the other hand I have received a threatening email from some government agency because I downloaded a blockbuster movie on torrent without a VPN.

Your first step should be to check if there is any precedent of people having legal troubles or ISP threats after pirating where you live.

Then you can decide on the available avenues to go around that.

In many countries, anti piracy laws can be very dumb (mostly because they are the result of technically illiterate lawmakers).

Again I could pirate everything online if the IP that does it for me is in a datacenter. But the second I would do that directly at home and I could get in trouble.

For example I could have a seedbox download for me some content on torrents and then upload it to a file hoster like mega or something. And then I download that file without triggering any copyright holder scanners. It’s stupid but if the torrenting is done by a business for me, it’s off radar. But it’s quite risky if I do it myself…

  • Interesting ! Thanks for the suggestion.

Although I usually have issues with third party clients all the time.

On Android for example I used the following clients so far :

    • Vanced YT
    • Revanced YT
    • Freetube
    • Newpipe
    • Morphe
    • Grayjay

All of them eventually failed or were down for extended durations. Point is, these third party apps are always vulnerable to YT purposefully sabotaging them.

But I will try it out anyway I don’t have much to lose.

PS : Hmmm, on Smart Tube’s Github :

My development environment was infected by unknown malicious software, as a result of which a few builds may have been affected. Once the issue was detected, I secured everything with a full disk wipe, restored a clean setup, and now all builds are scanned with VirusTotal. The F-Droid version will also be verified before release.

PS2 : My SmartTV is on WebOS, LG’s proprietary OS…

  • Most of the time I dont see any ads on YT and I watch a lot of content there. It’s getting harder to not get ads there on all my devices but it’s doable.

But when I go see my parents, I use their smartTV to watch YT. And I realize how horrible the experience is with all the interruptions and the impossibility to just focus on what you are watching.

And yesterday I got multiple time ads for a crypto scam called Ryxero or something. The scam was using AI clones of Bernard Arnault, a french billionaire, pretending you could win 1000€ a day…

The scam also had deepfakes of news outlets pretending that people in France were “queuing to ATM” to get their money…

I think it’s absolutely unacceptable that YT let them serve crypto scams to millions in complete impunity.

I will try to report the scam to authorities. I also reported it to YT but I dont expect them to act. The 3mn long ad was paid by an american business called “EX” which I think serves their scam abroad through YT in complete impunity.

For me the scam and AI clones is obvious but how many got scammed with the complicity of YouTube ? Hundreds ?

  • I agree completely that it is scary we use extensively something that we truly dont understand. But even with the cleanest and most open source and open weights model ever, this statement would be just as true.

With parameters in the billions all interacting with each others it’s extremely hard to analyse. LLM are inherently hard to understand fully not really because of the opaqueness of the training data but rather the raw number of parameters involved in inference.

I would certainly be more appreciative of an open weights model were we destroy the environment (I have no choice in that) but at least we get the resulting matrix of parameters rather than OpenAI shit were we have absolutely nothing.

IMO a model like Deepseek is most certainly a clone of someone else model that published their open weights. An open weights model enabled someone else to build on top of whatever controversial base was used. So at least it can be used by a wider audience and the original trainers don’t have their say in what you do as long as you respect the licence.

I think the above process has pretty much nothing to do about the struggle of some linux dev losing hair trying to make sense of a Microsoft obfuscated binary…

I guess many will not share that “lesser evil” point of view on open weights model but it’s not like anybody is gonna stop the AI conglomerate to do their shit in the complete dark and under no regulation whatsoever.

  • But a model isn’t “compiled”.

The weights are fully readable. Every single one of them.

In a binary you have to use special software to get to the source code. The weights are the source and can be freely used to create a model with. The weights are used “as is” no transformation has to be done like when reversing a closed source binary that could also use obfuscation to make it more difficult.

That’s why I would like to insist that open weights are not like a binary as they are usable as is essentially. When I use a model like that my computer is no executing the weights like instructions. They are aptly named “weights” for a reason and are a mere reflection of what the model learned through training.

Disclaimer, below this is the explanation between a closed source binary and open weights by an LLM :

A closed-source binary is like getting a sealed, opaque machine. You push a button, it gives an output. You have no idea how it works inside.

Open weights are like getting the complete, labeled blueprints (architecture) and the exact, measured specifications for every single component—every gear, wire, and circuit (weights). You don’t have the designer’s engineering notebooks (training data/recipe) or the factory that built it (training compute), but you can absolutely build the machine yourself, measure every part, swap out components, and try to improve it.
