5·7 days agoMy only knowledge of WWII comes from Saving Private Ryan, Pearl Harbor, Schindler’s List, Conspiracy, Enemy at the Gates, Midway, Memphis Belle, Das Boot, Valkyrie, and Band of Brothers. In NONE of those historical accounts is this story told. It’s probably covered in that Inglourioueaus Basteards documentary, which I still have yet to see.

22·7 days agoThis is why I hate all the superhero movies of the past 20 years. Their ubiquity has made people subconsciously believe someone else out there with super powers will come to save the day, so it’s okay to continue sitting back helplessly and waiting.

World News@lemmy.world•Nuclear Arms Control Era Comes to End Amid Global Rush for New WeaponsEnglish
5·7 days agoThermonuclear weapons: expensive and pointless. Once a country has “enough” of them to deter an attack by a nuclear-peer via MAD, adding more is completely pointless. You only need to MAD once, currently all other planets are already sterilized. Russia, US, China already have enough in their stockpiles for a MAD situation.
Maybe a temporary return to the anxiety-ridden existential madness of the early nuclear proliferatuon age could be a good thing, as it might scare people into wishing things could go back to being more “controlled” and existentially sane.
Oh wait, what? The climate is changing and coal is cute? Never mind.

There are still democracies out there? Like, in corporate boardrooms?
