There are many reasons given here. Many are not new though. These discussions existed in 1800s about the left having a hard time unifying.

World News@quokk.au•US will ask Europe to repay all aid sent to Ukraine, Trump says
111·1 month agoIt’s a survey about what people in some countries in the eu want. Lots of stuff. Not a single question explicitly about Greenland. But evidence that can lead to more informed opinions (eg countries who wouldn’t mind sending troops to Ukraine now which isn’t an eu country).
I know it’s a lot of work making inferences from data where you can’t just ctrl f a word and get an answer.
But the overall picture isn’t that citizens of the eu are feeling passive and just going to write letters. And I know that wasn’t a question either. Tricky is this thing called evidence.
And this was just one survey of many that exist.

World News@quokk.au•US will ask Europe to repay all aid sent to Ukraine, Trump says
201·1 month agoThank you for sharing the typical conservative talking points about the EU
While you are here, you may want to look at some (scary I know) actual evidence https://ecfr.eu/publication/home-alone-europeans-are-ready-to-defend-themselves/ about how people in the EU actually feel and what they are willing to do

World News@quokk.au•How the Chinese Communist Party Outsources Surveillance
3·3 months agoAn important sentence in the full report (as it will likely be misinterpreted by many):
“If there is outsourcing, it is likely to be to state-owned media companies based in Beijing.”
I’m not trying to offer any judgement about this. I just mean it’s not “outsourcing to tech bros” which I think some may read this as.
Also, I would have liked a better breakdown of the methodology as it sounds a little vague what they actually do. It seems to be: if judged as (potentially) problematic, do some mitigation. But which mitigation and the frequency (or their combination) is not clear. It probably is very hard to find out without leaked documents.

World News@quokk.au•U.S. and Iran exchange fire in Strait of Hormuz
11·5 months agoI said they are not my favourite people which kind of covers everything you are saying. You can mention them without having to preface everything wrong with them (and I wrote that sentence explicitly to not come across like I’m defending them and having answer these types of posts… but here we are).
I said it’s how they are coping with uncertainty. That’s all. Nothing more.

World News@quokk.au•U.S. and Iran exchange fire in Strait of Hormuz
2·5 months agoThese acronyms were made by finance people dealing with the uncertainty. Basically pretend trump doesn’t exist so financial uncertainty becomes less volatile.
I understand they have their problems. And they are not my favourite people in the world.
But given the amount of noise in the media, having a taco/nacho approach is sometimes a good filter to apply to media drama around Trumps venting online.
To be clear, I’m not saying disengage from following world events. I mean you don’t need to follow them like a soap opera.

Not a chance Hormuz opens.
From the people who gave us taco.

Never thought about it for about 20 years but a little sad nonetheless.

Europe@feddit.org•Democrats seek to reassure Europe about post-Trump AmericaEnglish
3·8 months agoThere are many systems that can work. I don’t think anyone in the rest of the world cares how you implement and safeguard the democracy. Just that you do it.
I think what is needed to repair relationships outward — and something that so many nonMAGA Americans lack — is humility. Look at the arrogance the UK had over Brexit and where they are today (albeit it could still get worse for them with reform). But they are moving slowly back to Europe and they will have a much lower standing for a very long time because of their utter stupidity. Thats what it will likely be, but amplified even more, for you guys. The trust is truly shattered.

Europe@feddit.org•Democrats seek to reassure Europe about post-Trump AmericaEnglish
38·8 months agoSo people joke about Obama getting the Nobel prize but it felt like it was the rest of the world rewarding the US for choosing sanity after 8 years of Bush.
There was a hope for things to get back to “normal”. Before then I remember Americans often wore Canadian flags cause the hatred was so high. I think people forget how badly the US fucked up then. (And this was the general feeling—not just the left who are well aware of the decades of problematic behaviour)
We’ve welcomed the US back once. Never again.
You keep fucking up the entire world because of your egos and your hate.
No “we’ve changed” or “we will change” rhetoric will work again until those who have caused this face consequences.
Fix yourselves before appealing for forgiveness.
