  • I like walking when I’m not in a hurry and the weather is nice, but the weather usually isn’t nice in most parts of the country (the US West Coast is an exception to that). I’m looking at moving to a southern state now and the only reason I’m even considering it is that I would be living in a car-centered area where I wouldn’t have to spend more than a couple of minutes a day outdoors during the summer. Compare that to NYC where I used to live: milder summers, but still hot, and I had no choice but to endure them (and winters, and rainy days) because I couldn’t drive to most places I went to. The unpleasantness of that far outweighs all the advantages of walkable neighborhoods for me.

  • It’s amazing. I use it as part of my work as a software developer, I get good advice from it regarding my personal life, and I can talk to it about topics that interest me but don’t interest my friends. Everything is great right now but I’m genuinely worried about the near future, when it might be able to do the entirety of my job better than I can. At least I got this far - I wonder whether my friends’ kids who were born recently will live in a future where they’ll never be capable of contributing anything valuable.

  • I don’t think that (for example) my couch and my TV which are never used are adding beauty to my living room. I don’t like sitting on a couch and watching TV, but for some reason I imagined that my friends would. Turns out that they don’t like that either, so we never do it when we hang out (we don’t hang out inside my house in the first place) and that stuff just costs money and takes up space.

If I were buying furniture all over again, I think I would just get a desk, an office chair, a bed (with a little end table), and my recliner. I eat at my desk, so I never use anything else.
