Calling Wikipedia American is disingenuous. Wikipedia is way too big to be reduced down to a single nation. Furthermore, as there are so many backups running offline of it worldwide, and yes, you can be one of those backups as well, it is difficult to censor Wikipedia. Wikipedia resembles very neutral viewpoints. Therefore, in my opinion, we cannot criticise Wikipedia for all of the other reasons we may hate the Americans, because the Americans are entirely separate from Wikipedia, and Wikipedia is separate from the Americans. It is truly global.

There’s not really one (Wikipedia is extremely succesful imho and a very good model for an online encyclopaedia), but you can download Wikipedia for offline use. That said, Wikipedia really should consider moving its HQ to Europe!

According to Wikipedia, its servers are hosted in various countries. Seven places to be precise; of which 3 in the US; 2 in Europe and the other two are in Asia and South America.

    Wiki alternatives
Encyclopedia Britannica is great, though its headquarters is in the US.

RationalWiki is also good, it’s explicitly anti-authoritarian. No idea about its base of operation.

I’d recommend Citizendium and Scholarpedia (peer-reviewed) as well, but I’m not sure if they are American-based or not.

If we’d be hosting an internationally based wiki of our own, Miraheze is one I liked as host - but it’s a company based in the US. A Norwegian-registered wiki would be handier. We also have to be aware of where the profit for a domain goes to. For example, the profit of an .io domain does not go to the British Indian Overseas territory, but to the UK. I’d recommend an .eu domain.

    Niches

For anarchists, there’s the Anarchist Wiki.

If you’re curious about Tolkien’s works, Tolkien Gateway is good, although the owner is American. I’m not sure where it is headquartered.

    Language-specific
Many languages have their own national Wikis; Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, to take a few.

Even if Wikipedia is still one of the best things hosted by the US, the usefulness of a backup is for anything.
