I thought EU would use its own digital payment, like those used in Asia and Brazil. 🤔
countries*
that said, this isn’t handy, identification, health, and really, all critical infrastructure, should be completely sovereign in the hands of Europe, away from the hands of anyone who seeks power or has it.
countries*
Country seems to refer to the territory (France, Germany, …) on which a state (the French Republic, the FRG, …) is established:
A country is a distinct area of land in the world with a government that functions as a sovereign state, an unrecognized state, a constituent country, or a dependent territory.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Country
Thus, it’s its states which constitute the EU, not their countries:
The European Union (EU) is a political and economic union of 27 member states that are located primarily in Europe.
But then you need to be very careful if talking to a Us american. They would hear “state” and think about their states - which are more like the “provinces” of most other states. Then it is better to use the term country, where Usa is one, and Russia is one, and in the EU there are 27, and in the world about 200.
But then you need to be very careful
It’ll be a great day when that’s something big enough to worry about.
State. Not every state is a part of a country, usually a state is the legal, administrative, governmental, etc framework of a country. You know, the official stuff and everything.
Why would anyone use this?
I mean, for important things, other than the ticket for the cinema or the bus?
It’s not strange people want an easy life. These features existing isn’t necessarily a problem. It only becomes a problem when either laws don’t protect consumers against big corporations or when big corporations ignores the law. There are people who see every big corporation as evil (i understand their reasons) and there are people who see all government as evil (i understand their reasons as well). Clearly, US laws don’t protect the users of these problems and also these companies (though Google more then Apple) have repeatedly proven they will use user data to increase their earnings. I can totally understand why somebody would want to use these features, but i myself would not trust Google or Apple with my important data, maybe my cinema ticket at most.
Why would anyone use this?
There are lots of reasons:
- Because people don’t know tech and use default apps or anything that is big in their app store (so >90% of people)
- Because people don’t care about privacy/big tech and use the most convenient way for them
- Because other companies make you use it by not functioning without it. (Probably like Sparkasse which is mentioned in the article)
Also i think the idea behind it is actually good.
Sparkasse customers will be able to confirm their age through Google Wallet without having to share details like their name, address or birth date.
So you can verify your age without giving out your personal information to a third party. Ofc Google has your private information which is a deal breaker i guess.

I would expect that from any “digital ID” (if it is more than a PDF scan) as one of the basic features.
Can you recommend any “digital ID” that is private? :)
Presumably the EU is also making an app for this. Isn’t the Google wallet thing basically an alternative?
Here are two related posts on Lemmy:
i’ll edit this comment in a sec with link preview:Gedoodverfd opvolger van DigiD is niet te gebruiken zonder Gmail-account of Apple-ID Linked article in Dutch, it covers the tech mentioned in the article of this post. “NL Wallet, the government’s upcoming digital identity app, relies on software from Apple and Google, according to research by Follow the Money.” For the rest of the English translation it’s in a comment; https://vger.to/lemmy.world/post/47664008
The Netherlands just blocked a US company from buying the app Dutch citizens use for everything This post from two days ago links an article about the current Dutch system, which was almost taken over by a big US corporation. https://vger.to/scribe.disroot.org/post/9308733
