Was it to get more colonists for America? Many Irish went there because of the famine or am I mixing up stuff?
America was independent for like 100 years by this stage, so I doubt that was a motivation for them.
It was for profit (exporting food made money, importing free food would lower prices/distort the market) . . . and to get less Irish in Ireland.
