Explanation: Giuseppe Garibaldi, sometimes known as “The Hero of Two Worlds” because of his constant activity in both the Americas (the ‘New World’) and Europe (part of the ‘Old World’), was a dedicated republican, liberal, and later, socialist, revolutionary. He had a long history of inspiring ragtag forces to punch far above their weight - though not always enough to save the causes he fought for. He was well-known for his bravery, and his troops were known to adore and idolize him both as a paragon of virtue and as a brave and ferocious soldier himself who did not fear personal combat.
During the Franco-Prussian War, Garibaldi initially opposed France - under Napoleon III’s dictatorial empire, he regarded it as an abomination, a reactionary regime of the worst sort. Memorably, once Napoleon III was captured and the remnants of the French state decided to declare a republic once more, Garibaldi threw himself into the cause of saving France.
… unfortunately, as he only commanded a small force, and near the border of Italy, he scored only a few minor victories while the French brass racked up humiliating defeats on the main, northern front, eventually losing the war.
Interestingly, Garibaldi would vocally support the (radical, socialist-anarchist) Paris Commune rather than the Third Republic when the two came into conflict, though by that time he was deep back in Italy and had only enough time to accept the honors of the Commune by letter and praise their ideals and endeavor, as the entire Commune lasted only three months before the Third Republic crushed it with military force.
