  • The difference is that a tip is “you’re already getting paid to do your job, why would I pay you to do your job?”. Whereas this is “you gave me this for free, so maybe if I make a bunch of money I could show appreciation for that gift” or pay-it-forward so the next guy can also get a free start, etc.

And yes I know they’re are busted places on this Earth where basically servers don’t already get paid to do their job and are thus reliant on tips as income, but that’s a different problem…

  • I think GPD is a company, and they make a device called the GPD Win 5. And I think that device is in the class of Handheld Devices called “AMD Strix Halo”. And so a representative of GPD has said that the {GPD Win 5} will be the first {AMD Strix Halo} handheld device to ship with native Bazzite support.

Now, what I can’t answer without Googling, which I refuse to do on principle at this point, is what an AMD Strix Halo is, though I assume it’s like a Steam Deck. And I don’t know how anyone thought “AMD Strix Halo” was an acceptable name for a class of devices. And I’m also not sure why GPD thought GPD Win 5 was an acceptable name either. I guess, like, you win at games? And this is hopefully the 5th in the GPD Win family? But this name is too verby to me.

  • I can least kinda appreciate this guy’s approach. If we assume that AI is a magic bullet, then it’s not crazy to assume we, the existing programmers, would resist it just to save our own jobs. Or we’d complain because it doesn’t do things our way, but we’re the old way and this is the new way. So maybe we’re just being whiny and can be ignored.

So he tested it to see for himself, and what he found was that he agreed with us, that it’s not worth it.

Ignoring experts is annoying, but doing some of your own science and getting first-hand experience isn’t always a bad idea.
