Software engineers are hired to solve problems, not write code. If you can write code but can’t solve problems and create innovative solutions you’re no better than a monkey.
I believe most people’s problem with AI comes from the potentially massive financial bubble and economical damage to come from over-adoption of the technology where it should not be used.
Many people, like Torvalds, know that AI is useful for certain things when used responsibly. Low level programming is one of the best places for it. You’re not solving business problems. These are usually optimization and security problems with verifiable outcomes(ex AI finds bug, you can actually confirm bug exists).
Unfortunately the ease of which you can produce crap with AI causes big problems for everyone trying to actually improve things.

I listened to a podcast with a couple smart mathematicians talking about AI recently and this rings true based off what I heard them discuss.
They hypothesized that only verifiable domains can really see advances due to AI. So mathematics, physics, a load of the other sciences, and medical research. Even programming, as long as you have a pre-designed solution.
But for problems where you can’t look at a solution and say “yeah, that’s an optimal solution or close to it”, ie basically any business problem; they are much less useful, a big reason being what you mentioned in your comment.
Really cool of valve to do this and include a full tutorial.
Just about any other company would keep it closed and sell the accessory with proprietary software; then if that was not commercially viable, would just not release anything at all.
I mean, this is why you read the terms and conditions.
If the app was completely free, I feel that personal data tradeoff is likely worth it for a lot of these users. Especially if properly anonymized.

Kids are going to use their phones for random bullshit in class no matter what if they are allowed, but phones in general can be a fantastic learning tool used in the classroom.
I wonder if we might eventually see schools distribute phones like they do laptops, even though that in itself is rare. It would allow the school to lock them down during school hours. Maybe include some option to buy out the phone/number when a student leaves.
A common complaint of not allowing phones is that students can’t contact their parents quickly in an emergency or vice versa. A locked down phone with “emergency contacts” fixes that issue.
