  • It won’t kill a man but it’s still incorrect syntax and a faux pas, it’s fine if you’re fine with that, but that doesn’t make it standard.

Also it’s not really new information that international speakers speak English better than natives, just look at all the “their” “they’re” confusion that happens when someone learned English as a native but not when they go through the whole shebang of learning about possessives and articles, so just because a native English speaker ignores a rule in their own language that doesn’t really speak much about the language, it says more about the speaker.

  • mate, don’t be disingenuous, fireworks have a distinct noise pattern; while they are mechanically explosions calling them that instills the image of cannon fire, tank missiles, or pipe bombs, and yeah I wouldn’t want to be woken up by that either, but fireworks are fireworks.

then again you sound like the type of person to hate kids playing football in front of your building, cause “random shouting isn’t fun for anyone except individual self centred etc etc”. The world is bigger than you, if anything you dictating how others should have their harmless fun looks like being self centred to me, and that’s fine, we all push for policies that benefit us, but don’t take the moral high ground as if you’re being selfless when you’re just interested in getting less noise in your neighbourhood for yourself.

  • Made sense to me but it definitely could use another draft. Just adding some punctuation would help because it’s a long phrase and the punchline blends into one of the sentences, but here’s the same message with minor tweaks and punctuation:

Reading this while working for a division that pivoted twice — first to providing interfaces for agentic workflows (only to discover that only ten users had ever touched the products we made for agents), only to pivot again to support for agentic workflows (which has a lot of competition because every company has to do something agentic now and there’s only like four things you can do in that space) — is bracing.

  • I upvoted because yes you are right to a degree, but communication is really important and shapes the relation the average consumer has with the product.

Your tap water comes through pipes, laid in the ground, some rusty some not, some you get warnings that they’re not safe to drink from. The systems around it are made to highlight its health risks if any.

Clouds though are clean, white, up in the sky, they’re a force of nature. using it as a metaphor almost makes it sound like we’ve harnessed something that was already there, it doesn’t instill the same image as stacks and stacks of computers in a heavily ventilated building that could be around the corner.

You could reasonably group this together with the abstraction of files and folders to apps for gen alpha and newer, now settings for your application aren’t in a readily accessible file, a program isn’t just an executable, it’s an ✨app✨ that has its own settings and folder structure hidden away from you. All the transparency of how things work is polished out of the experience, all in order to instill trust and increase profits. A layman won’t realise that the viruses his pc can get are also something that can happen to “the cloud”, similarly what files are there to worry about being stolen from a phone when they can’t even see them because the app has them in its own folders?
