Oh don’t get me started on the attitude of France with historical objects stolen from the country they invaded. But macron said that they should have said “thank you” for being invaded so I guess it’s their fault.

Why is there such French propaganda lately on lemmy?

Are you saying this article is French propaganda? If so, what would you have them do instead, keep the drum?

“Keeping the drum” is basically what they do with all foreign objects they stole. This is trying to make it look like France is in favor of cultural independence, but they are constantly having the speech of “these inferior countries don’t deserve to have their stuff back, they’re too primitive for that”

If an article says “Trump hugs a black guy” you wouldn’t see it as propaganda?

The point of advertising as positive, something that is supposed to be normal, to have been done long ago, and that is just an exception in the middle of a lot of shit, is propaganda, yes.

It is one of hundreds of objects France is preparing to send back to Africa, with the efforts set to be accelerated by the passing of a new law to authorise mass repatriations.

I just don’t understand how France returning artifacts is a bad thing. This is a good thing. Take the fucking win and move on.

You’re not reading what I’m saying?

It is a fragment of the things returned. For this to happen, the country has to basically beg and plead for years. The way these “returns” are made are humiliating, and a direct “fuck you” against these countries.

If someone gets raped but the rapist then throws a few coins at them, you’d be like “how is getting free money a bad thing? Just take the win and move on”?

This is not about a win. These countries have the right to own their culture, this right has been stolen, and being given back a fragment in exchange for years of diplomatic struggle is not a win at all.

Take a look at the “limitations” paragraphs of this page https://openrestitution.africa/country/france/

Every restitution is an exception, not the rule, and that is what makes it unacceptable. Once again, macron quite clearly said that France wouldn’t apologize for the colonies, on the contrary he thinks they should thank France instead, and a few objects returned means nothing in the context it is in.

You’re just participating in the bullshit that modern procolonialism is, by thinking that throwing a few peanuts to the victims is not just good, but even enough.

I’ve seen a lot of articles trying to show France positively lately, often by specific accounts, that try to (for example) give a positive image of Macron, of France, of De Gaulle, of the French government, to spread the far-right extremist propaganda that comes from there (with the recent death of a violent nazi assaulter shown as the horrible murder of a poor innocent pacifist bystander), etc.

France has been transforming very very fast into a very fascist country thanks to macron, and so having articles that dare to basically say “the world is having to admit that France is right” or shit like that seems a lot that the techniques of the far right to spread their ideas. And it wasn’t like that on lemmy, let’s say, six months ago.

You think the fart right would advocate for returning stolen cultural artifacts to their rightful owners?

The goal is to show France as a nice, culturally aware country that respects other countries, while it does the exact opposite.

It’s basically the same kind of manipulation as when the far right talks about wanting freedom of speech or being colorblind. It’s trying to put a positive look on something negative to influence people into tolerating and normalising it.

“No, the nazis are not so extreme or racist, look, they gave back a drum that the country stole. They are being reasonable in the end”
