The Foreign Ministries of France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom have issued a joint statement regarding the Russia-Georgia War. The joint statement was published on social media by the British Embassy in Georgia.

As stated in the joint declaration, the Foreign Ministries reaffirm their full support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.

“August 7th is a date when we remember the grave consequences of Russian imperialism. On this day in 2008, the Russian Federation took military action against Georgia, further damaging Georgia’s territorial integrity by occupying the Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

18 years after the Russian aggression, we reaffirm our full support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia within its internationally recognised borders. We welcome the Republic of Naoero’s decision to withdraw its recognition of the so-called independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. We urge states that have established diplomatic relations with these entities to follow this example.

In October 2025, the European Court of Human Rights found the Russian Federation guilty of many violations committed in the occupied breakaway regions, including excessive use of force, ill-treatment, unlawful detention and unlawful restrictions on day-to-day movement across the administrative boundary line between Georgian-controlled territory and Russian-occupied territory. We urge Russia to implement the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights relating to this situation and to fully fulfil the commitments it made on August 12 and September 8, 2008,” the statement reads.

Furthermore, the Foreign Ministries of France, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom expressed grave concern over the recent agreement signed between Moscow and the de facto authorities of South Ossetia, describing it as a clear violation of international law.

“We are concerned about the latest developments in South Ossetia. The “Agreement on Deepening Alliance and Cooperation” signed on May 9, 2026, between Moscow and the de facto authorities of South Ossetia further violates Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, in clear breach of international law. This document, as well as the appointment of a Russian citizen to head the region, raises concerns about a possible full-fledged annexation of the region, which would not go unanswered.

We reaffirm our support for the “Geneva International Discussions” (GID) platform, co-chaired by the European Union, the OSCE, and the United Nations. This is the only framework that will enable the parties to work towards conflict resolution. We commend the work of the European Union Monitoring Mission in Georgia (EUMM), and we will continue to support the role of the mission,” the joint statement concludes.

Ah, yes, famous opponents of imperialism Germany, France and Britain on one side and proponent of national self-determination Russia on the other. I wonder which of these paragons of virtue is telling the truth.

Sarcasm aside, I don’t have anything resembling a horse in this race; can someone sell me on either side of this?

Exactly. If only there was some modern context about Russia’s imperialistic behaviors to help one decide which side of this issue to side with.

Yes, as opposed to the paragons of anti-imperialism Britain, Germany and France. I don’t choose what to think about complex issues based on “this or that country bad,” but even if I did everybody here is bad.

That doesn’t make Russia’s doing it acceptable. It just makes your defense of it all the more offensive and hypocritical. As well as eminently predictable. Perhaps all these big states, China included should stop saver rattling and trying to steal territory.

Uh… did you even read what I wrote? I didn’t defend anything; I said that neither party involved deserves trust and asked if anyone has useful information about this. For the record this is quite obviously a Russian land grab, but that doesn’t discount the possibility that South Ossetia has a valid claim to independence that it’s realizing by cooperating with Russia’s land grab. However it obviously doesn’t prove that possibility either, which is why I asked.

This you? Whataboutism is a defense. A bad defense, but it is a defense. Had you stopped at the post before that. Yes you were asking for more information and there’s nothing wrong with that. But you reflexively dove in to pre defend. Something I’ve seen you do quite often when it comes to a certain group of powerful oppressive states. But not for others. Odd. That type of behavior is wrong whoever does it. And Russia has a long history of meddling with countries and states along their border.

You can read the history of Abkhazia on Wikipedia.

In short: Russia has since its tsarist days tried everything to detach it from Georgia and attach it closer to Russia. Be it by banning the Georgian language, mandating Russian language education and mandating the Cyrillic alphabet to be used for the Abkhazian language.

Anyway, despite all this about 50% of the population remained Georgian. Until they were nearly entirely ethnically cleansed in the 90s with Russian military support.

Almost like a 5 second search would have given you the answer. Instead trying to claim that past imperialism by others somehow has a bearing on current Russian imperialism.

Your disingenuous arguments just show you are either one of the many Russian propaganda accounts, or a useful idiot for them.

First, I think you’ll find the imperialism of these countries is very much ongoing. Second, I must be a very nice Russian propaganda account if it only takes one reply engaging honestly with my question to make me say “oh fair the Russians are wrong on this one.” Third, reported for incivility.

And report was rejected because it wasn’t really incivility and “useful idiot” is a pretty weak insult tbh. “Shill” could be slightly better. But this is still awfully weak to count as incivility.

Unless anzo or povoq want to count it as incivility. But by instance rules at least I wouldn’t count it as such.

Nato so far doesn’t allow new members with unsettled territorial conflicts. I have read that this is Russia’s strategy to prevent that Nato expansion.

The minorities wanted to split since 1991. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georgian_civil_war_of_1991–1993

I think it is a piece of the puzzle in the fight for control of Asia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Grand_Chessboard

There is the dawn of the multipolar world order and the need to contain China.

Personally I think it’s preparation for the big war and sides don’t matter because I most likely will be dead if that happens. I think as regular citizens this is a reminder that we need to find a way to settle these conflicts in a peaceful manner soon before they are escalated.
