i’d like to make a counterpoint actually about leftists (not usual libs) purportedly believing this. largely i’ve observed (and been of the similar tendency in the past) that most leftists that are non-MLs (say, some self identified anarchocommunists in the west, i have little to no desire to litigate with you anarchism and what is REAL anarchism, that’s not my forte nor do i care a lick in this instance since i’m referring to anyone that self-identifies which is a massive range) do in fact argue that both situations should be typified as cultural genocide. many leftists do in fact interact with ideas about decolonialism then use cultural genocide as atrocity propaganda against AES.
this is out of what i speculate is pure incredulity at the idea that a state/society can interact with an indigenous group with anything else apart from annihilation or exploitation as a goal, a type of absolutism typical with most non-ML communists’ perception of power.
the ussr, for example, has been decried as genociding its minority groups/smaller states (with things like the holodomor, at my stupid bougie school we were fed this idea about poland, you start to understand why the poles act as they do), china has fended off multiple of these allegations (xizang, then xinjiang), russia has a lot of decolonial language tossed its way even though that analysis doesn’t really work usually. it’s basically them swinging very far in the ‘left’ direction for their analysis, often because their analysis of decolonialism (and often imperialism) is, of course, idealist and not grounded in materialism, only identified as the exertion of control.
