To the surprise of exactly no one. China has pulled off a masterclass of beating everyone else at capitalism and neocolonialism without any violence outside their own borders. Evil, but smart. Rest of the world governments come across like uneducated slobs in comparison. China is the Hans Landa of capitalists.
Oh they absolutely are aggressive dipshits and constantly saber-rattling - and yes, they did murder people in the south china sea. But it’s a different quality from starting wars (or bombing fisher boats off the south american coast).
So I’d rephrase my original comment to “without starting major war-like conflicts outside their borders” (to date - I absolutely believe they are weighing their options very carefully regarding an invasion of Taiwan, the actual China*)
