    I’m kind of surprised that nobody ever thought it worthwhile to haul all that steel (or iron?) to a scrapyard for recycling.

    Yes, the prices for ferrous metals aren’t high … but they’re also not nothing, and with that much of it, you’re looking at a pretty significant amount.

      If you go there, you’d see how impractical that would be. You’d need a team of specialists and millions of pounds worth of equipment just to get the equipment you needed onto the right level. If it was feasible, it would’ve happened. Everything on the upper levels was left since the 1960s.
