The full-body bathing suit favoured by some Muslim women has become a bugbear of the European far right, which has campaigned to restrict Muslim dress in public spaces.

In a ruling made public this week, the Salzburg Court found that the hotel in the western ski resort of St. Johann im Pongau had discriminated against two Austrian Muslim women by preventing them from wearing the garment.

After a heated argument with the manager, who insisted that the burkini was unhygienic and made other guests feel uncomfortable, the women filed a complaint about the incident last year.

It found that the hotel manager’s argument that the garment was unhygienic “does not hold water, as burkinis are made from the same materials as other swimwear and routine water checks found no irregularities”.

Also, yes, “burkini” is just a racist term for a rash guard.

Not really. A burkini also includes head and neck coverage and long leggings. The name is used by the brands who make and sell them to specify that combination.

I wish I could find a rash guard that would cover more of my neck, and it’s also quite hard to find good swimming leggings longer than board shorts. If they made burkinis that would fit a 1.95m tall guy I’d probably get one.

Rash guards come with hoods, you just have to specify that when searching for them. I was even able to get one recently that has both a hood and a built-in neck gaiter.

I agree though that the selection of swim leggings for men is not good.

Was interested in shorts you can swim and cycle in. Shame they cost so much though, it’s essentially looking for triathlon gear. Also not a massive fan of how skin tight they seem to be.

Also I live by the sea, so it’s salt water rather than fresh. There might just not be any practical options. Unless maybe a 2 layer approach could work, base layer to prevent rubbing and then regular swim shorts over the top.
