My country heavily uses Facebook for all events. Sadly I can’t find cool events without it. Even leftist groups are heavily on Meta, which I can’t understand…

Does anyone have experience pushing to get communities off of Meta? Suggestions?

I’m in a NATO “ally” to the US country

I got my close family and partner to use Signal but thats about it in terms of pushing.

Recently my bouldering group also moved to Signal, which was a nice surprise. But we are most likely all a little autistic in some way.

In terms of events: there are still many places that have websites. Admittedly I don’t go out too much, but i find concerts and events just fine when i want to. It’s an active thing though and not just appearing in my feed.

Welcome to discovering how completely inept every single person you know is at anything “technological”.

I’m seriously just thinking of never talking about technology around real life humans again. It’s so depressingly pathetic.

I’m the only one in my band that doesn’t use Facebook and arranging a “play-date” can be a challenge, people often forget that I don’t see everything they post, and I’m often the last one to get notified about changes to our schedule or set.

I’ve given up on trying to convert them, but try to lead by example.
Everything that can be done on Facebook, can be done elsewhere, and I refuse to be bullied into supporting a horrible company like Facebook.

Yeah I basically need Facebook for the events and WhatsApp is absolutely necessary for work and social life. Absolutely everybody uses WhatsApp so if I didn’t it would be like not having a phone… I guess in nonprofits that are open to being critical against the “Big Tech” “Gafam” you could try getting people to check out Mobilizon or if it’s just planing a date with friends then Framadate is better suited. Of course there are probably other alternatives that could fit some use cases better but I think giving one option to people is better than ten and forcing people to then choose.

Part of it is a chicken or egg. I go into these platforms and there’s nothing there, so I don’t check them. Organizers see nobody checking them, so they don’t maintain them.

Well framadate is just a link to send to friends to pick a time and date for a meet up so you dont need the network.

Mobilizion can be linked to a website or your own calendar I guess but I suppose there are just too many people that use Facebook indeed.
