Does a business ever need an explanation beyond money?
yes
Since when? Here’s how we can picture it going down.
French MPs: Capgemini, explain your contract with ICE.
Capgemini: Easy, money. Fuck USA & suck our dicks until you make that illegal.
The end.
Of course money is the motivation, but it is not what Lescure is pushing for. Capgemini have already moved beyond the “money” explanation, by stating that they didn’t know and that CSG has a different board etc etc which isn’t seen as acceptable.
How Capgemini explains this will have consequences for the company, and although it could happen, legal action isn’t the only consequence. For instance the French state is a big client of the company and could shift business to other companies, it could also escalate politically, it could cause commercial fallout etc etc.
Said another way: the French discover that late-stage capitalism and cronyism knows no border.
How quaint…
This is hardly new by the way: IBM famously provided the Nazis with the means to run the holocaust efficiently, and the Americans should have been outraged too back then, but - in retrospect, unsurprisingly - weren’t.
There’s something inherently fascist about the capitalist construct of a corporation that has to concern itself only with profit and line going up, and therefore has a license to disregard people’s humanity, using them up and crushing them as needed to achieve growth. For capitalists, fascism is just an opportunity to keep doing what they do but with the gloves off.
