Maybe it’s because they to math in between the Olympics?
I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s called Olympiad because that’s what Olympics are called in Eastern Europe and we mostly either run or win those competitions so we get to name them lol.

Only in the classical definition. The term “olimpiad” is widely accepted to refer to competitions on subjects not involving physical sports.
