Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•Epstein was invited to gatherings with US lawmakers members years after his arrest
11·2 days agoFor Epstein, this type of offer was far from unusual.
For
Epsteinthe Grand Old Pedophiles, this type of offer was far from unusual, but even Democratic leaders were glad to rub shoulders with the convicted pedophile:Over half the lawmakers involved are from New York, New Mexico and Florida — states where Epstein owned sprawling properties. Notable names include House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Martin Heinrich.

“Considering your Country decided not to give me the Nobel Peace Prize for having stopped 8 Wars PLUS, I no longer feel an obligation to think purely of Peace,” the 79-year-old wrote in a message to his Norwegian counterpart.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some depressing realizations or positive benefits about life you've learned growing up?
13·3 days agoLisa was an older friend who had early onset Alzheimer’s. When her memory problems got severe her sister asked for a loan and my friend pulled thousands out of her 401k.
The sister realized that Lisa could not remember giving her the loan after a few weeks, (much less remember to ask it be repaid) and came back asked for loans eleven more times. Lisa’s 401K was almost completely drained and she was left with a huge tax bill that finished it off. She ended up on Medicaid the last years of her life.
May the sister rot in hell.

Technology@lemmy.world•Why are people disconnecting or destroying their Ring cameras?English
2·5 days agoRunning cables is not possible in lots of homes and there are plenty of wired cameras that send video to corporate clouds. The mistake is allowing those corporations access to those videos. Camera output should be encrypted and only usable for the camera owner unless they choose to opt in to the corporate spy network.
I imagine the 330 gallons of sulfuric acid delivered to the island would have taken care of most of them.

"How is it encrypted, with what algorithm? was the alg implemented securely? who has the decryption keys? how were the keys generated? were they generated from a good enough entropy source? "
This was obviously written for people with quite a bit of knowledge. Most newcomers would have absolutely no idea what any of it means.
