  • Billionaires have finally achieved attaining 100% of the world wealth. Everyone not a billionaire is homeless. Although destitute, every citizen owns a pair of Meta glasses whose latest version allows the corporation to harvest brainpower through the ocular socket, powering the entire BillionaireVerse where they can SA virtual children in the event they don’t find any of the local children sexy enough. In exchange for their brainpower, the glasses will convert the user’s cardboard box home into visual representations of expensive homes. The economy is driven solely by billionaires selling to other billionaires. Epstein Island has been made a historical landmark where the billionaires come every year to pray in front of the lifesize statue of Donald Trump blowing Clinton.

  • That’s one beef I have with the EFF right now. They offer no alternative solutions to this. They just didn’t want any kind of protections at all.

That’s because public discourse is saturated by the extreme at both ends of the spectrum. The part of society that feels there could be some solution in the center of the argument is drowned out by Stallman zealots that feel that diddling kids is bad but you shouldn’t be kept from doing it if it requires any information on you while the corporate sycophants are crying that they can’t protect THE KIDS if they don’t have every piece of information on you from birth onwards.

I view it the same as politics. I’ll let the others behave as if they have a say in it and argue for or against. I’ll just quit using discord when they require verification, as I will/have for any other corporation that does the same. Not because I don’t think verification of some kind would help protect everyone from additional risk but because providing my very sensitive information to corporations that both exploit my data and pass it on to hackers and third-parties is not something I am willing to do.

  • It’s really much harder than you’d imagine it’d be before starting if you’re hoping to retain the same level of convenience. I’d say nearly impossible.

I moved my phone to Graphene last week and have spent countless hours getting things to work and finding ways to do things without Google’s various apps and there is always a concession to be made. You can install those G-apps but that’s the whole point so you have to keep accepting things like no RCS in messages, no touch-to-pay, no reliable speech synthesis, a bunch of non-working apps if they rely on the play services, no whole-phone backup and restore, etc. The list is very, very long.

I’m not Google-free on it but with sandboxed and permission-stripped G-apps, I’m hoping I’m not leaking my data to Google.

  • I understand completely but am trying to mold my access to the world in a way that doesn’t cause me such depression. I don’t use the normal social networks, I’ve used the piefed filters to block everything about musk, trump, ice, america, politics, etc. and I’ve never followed any kind of “news”.

Before I did that, I was literally becoming chronically suicidal(well, that’s not gone but it’s better) from the absolute shit-show that the world has become(it’s not just the US, other countries are quickly adopting the bipartisan hatred model now that they see it works to divide). It would be different if you saw something regarding a change towards improvement but that’s never seen, you just get another endless scroll of shit that is destroying society with no way to change it.

The fediverse is just as bad as any other social network out there. Although the leaning is opposite, it’s still full of extremism, hyperbolic hatred, ridicule, mockery, division and sufferporn. Without filters, it would be as unusable to me as, say, facebook or trump’s social network.

I’m withdrawing a lot from people online but still spend a lot of time online, it’s just not as interactive as it used to be.

If this is not sustainable, I’m sure I’ll likely follow your lead and leave it to the rest of the world.
