Between dem strategists (donors) constantly pushing dems to appeal to the right and the number of DINOs (both known and more behind the scenes ready to step up) - it really is a depressing state of affairs.

Technology@lemmy.world•China’s dancing robots: how worried should we be?English
2·27 days agoIndeed. Can we trade the invaders for dancing bots? What a world…
Seems like the dev team has a good sense of humor!
Despite repeated polite requests to not ask us for specific feature ETAs, the questions kept coming. In an effort to try and curtail this, we toyed with setting a “minimum” date for the feature and simply doubling it every time the question was asked. This very quickly led to the date being after the predicted heat death of the universe. We fell back on a tried and tested response pioneered by id Software; DP Alt Mode will be done when it’s done.

24·1 month agoNot the same. The working class works/contributes for a living by definition. Billionaires live off others money via loans they pay off… with more loans.
- +1 for ventoy - easy way to explore the look and feel of different options before committing. You can boot from the drive without a full install and then reboot to run another image.

didn’t see it mentioned but Asahi Linux is a project for running Linux on supported mac hardware. Could keep your Mac hardware running for you for a long while.

2 cents on distros: cachyOS with KDE desktop is a pretty snappy and easy entry point with a lot of fun development happening currently. As others noted, it’s all personal preference tho.

You Should Know@lemmy.world•YSK: Billionaires with $1 salaries – and other legal tax dodges the ultrawealthy use to keep their riches
292·1 month agoThey don’t sell, they take loans instead:
At some point, one might expect that the ultrawealthy would have to sell their shares to finance their lifestyle. Do they? In selling those shares, wouldn’t they have to pay a capital gains tax?
For most of us, when we own property or stock that has increased in value, it doesn’t mean anything to us unless we sell it. But those with great wealth can access that wealth without paying taxes by simply borrowing against their assets. And that is what our richest Americans do.
Billionaires like Larry Ellison and Elon Musk borrow huge sums of money to support their lifestyle, pledging their stock as collateral. This borrowing is entirely tax-free and comes at good rates. In addition, in recent years the growth in stock value more than compensatesfor any interest that might accrue. To pay the interest and pay back the loans, they simply borrow again.

Would be nice to stop using such sanitized language to describe how horrible and unjustifiable these actions are from unfathomably wealthy & tax evading corporations.
