ICE wants us all to be scared of resisting them. Don’t fucking fall for it. It is everyone’s duty to resist at all times.

She doesn’t need to be scared because she’s not doing anything wrong. She is exercising free speech, she is defending the constitution. We are not criminals. We are law abiding citizens, and we will abide by the laws and the constitution while we hold these contemptible unconstitutional criminals in the contempt they deserve. We don’t need to be scared because we’re not going to cower and hide from fascists, are we? If we do that, they’re going to win. I don’t want them to win. Do you? That’s not defending your country. The right thing to do to fascists is to fight them.

ICE needs to be afraid. This is the right way for us to make them feel. They’re the ones doing wrong things. We will make them afraid. We will not let them make us afraid. That is how you lose the fight. We need to fight like our lives depend on it. Because everyone’s lives do in fact depend on it.

Haha. I always thought when they got rid of old.reddit.com, that would be the day I finally left the site never to come back. I never expected I would leave before that happened, but here I am on Lemmy, learning about what they’re doing to old.reddit.com, while having not gone back in ages and having no particular interest to anymore. RIP Reddit, you won’t be missed, except maybe the first /r/Place, that was pretty cool.

It is important to think about and keep in mind, but it’s also important not to judge blindly. Do some research before you make a decision on something like this and try to make an informed decision. People aren’t responsible for where they’re born, and not everyone is in a position for fight or flight. Most Russians are victims of Putin too, some worse than others. Many of them may be ignorant, yes, and even deeply unpleasant and unlikable people with nasty attitudes, but they are also brainwashed by one of the most manipulative and subtly oppressive regimes that has possibly ever existed in the modern world. Organizing a resistance against tyranny isn’t easy. Even finding the motivation to resist it isn’t easy. If it was easy, we wouldn’t have such problems with tyrants all around the world, and orangeman wouldn’t have lasted a week.

If you don’t want to send money that will end up in Russia, I don’t blame you. If you are afraid of the infiltration and malware risks that come with using software made in Russia, I don’t blame you for that either. But the guy himself is probably just a normal person, unless there’s specific evidence otherwise. “Othering” and demonizing other people is the path to the dark side. You can hate the country and government and the system, and you should, but not the people born and raised within it. They’re in a big fucking mess, and you would be too if you lived there. Just because you think you’d make different choices personally, doesn’t mean they’re making bad ones for the situation they’re in.

We are all just people. We are not better or worse than any other people. We are all trying to do the same things in life. Even the Russian people. But we’ve been made to be different by our environments and nations and governments that benefit from us being divided and hating each other. Don’t play their game.

What is so complicated about it? From what I understand, a laser (de)ionizes a big drum to put the image on it. The (de)ionized roller either picks up or doesn’t pick up toner. The toner deposits on the paper in exactly the same pattern it was picked up. A hot roller then fuses it on. If open source machines can 3d print with plastic and resin and UV light and high temperatures accurately enough to create physical objects, I don’t see why it should be any fundamental trouble to have some system capable of moving a laser across a 2d plane/roller with either optics or mechanically, and aside from whatever material they use on that image drum, all the parts are just simple rollers and heaters and high voltage, which are essentially jellybean parts at this point, even toner cartridges and rollers are essentially commodity items. Optics would be better if you want it fast and accurate, I suppose, but there’s no particularly complex magic and nothing top-secret that would be difficult to develop as far as I know. An open source one will probably be slow and clunky and maybe imprecise and power-hungry, but speed and efficiency and precision are not magic and are not fundamentally required for the principles of operation, it’s something you can improve over time.

They can just not be cunts, once they’re fully defeated and regime changed and nation-built back into a civilized country. A man can dream, anyway.

They can’t have been talking about Windrose either, then, because they very clearly said it was writing log file entries every 500 milliseconds. Either they misunderstood the scale too, or they were talking about a different issue, because 500 milliseconds is definitely not on the same scale as what Codex or Windrose are being accused of. The game issue they described is not comparable to either of those scenarios.

500 milliseconds is an eternity in computer time. Doing a 10KB write (very generously large for a logfile) write every 500 milliseconds is something it could do continuously for about 1,000 years before it used up the write capacity of an SSD.

I’m more concerned about the dictatorial-feeling attitudes in the marketing than I am about the price. I’m all for a privacy respecting phone, but an even higher priority than that is respecting me and my choices. Blocking me from social media doesn’t feel like it’s catering to me, it feels like its nannying me and dictating my choices to me. That’s not something I’m interested in at any price.

I realize that I will, in reality, be able to choose whether to leave those blocked, but having them blocked by default feels just as aggressively judgemental and disrespectful as preinstalling them and shoving them in my face like most existing brands do. It’s not your place to tell me what apps to use or not to use. Give me a fucking blank slate, and let me decide, thankyouverymuch.

I want the subreddit to be at least 95% NOT AI, but without completely excluding AI content (which must be tagged) and I don’t want to see everything tagged “[NOT AI]” because that’s genuinely obnoxious.

I understand that this is maybe not realistically achievable given the technical limitations within the Lemmy platform, but those limitations are not going to make such an implementation any less obnoxious, even if it is implemented that way for my benefit.

I would rather trust the mods and downvoters to clean up not-tagged or dishonestly Not-AI-tagged AI content, personally.

It’s been time for a long time now, the problem is we need to be able to organize a resistance, and they’ve disrupted any efforts at organization by the lower classes, pretending it was just about labor unions when really it’s about our ability to unify ourselves with any legitimate shared identity or concern. Divide and conquer: we’ve been divided, and now we’re being conquered. Our choices are basically to set aside our differences with our neighbors and unite again as “we the people”, or die as economically and politically irrelevant serfs whose disorganized and frustrated attempts at resistance will be carefully, methodically and violently crushed by the boot of fascism as isolated uprisings.

Projecting their own insecurities onto other people seems to be a hallmark of this administration. I would argue it’s a guilty conscience perhaps if I thought they had one.

My positivity varies, honestly, the world’s rough right now. But the thing I keep coming back to is to realize how many of us are actually on the same page, as much as they’ve tried to divide us and keep us divided, controlling even the information we see, most of us are all still ultimately seeing almost the same things. We’re not divided on the things that matter, the things that are real. Most people hate AI. Most people hate what the tech companies and billionaires are doing. Most people hate what the government fascists are doing. Divided we fall, united we are unstoppable. They have not managed to completely break our grip on reality, and it’s that same relentless and unstoppable reality we all see that is showing us that we are all in this together, that we have more in common with each other than we do against each other.

Money, democracy, government, police, nations, these are not physical constants of the universe, they are just collective decisions we’ve made. If they’ve been corrupted, and I think they have, then they don’t have to continue to exist in the shape and form and traditions we originally made them in. We made the rules, we can change the rules. They continue to exist as they are because we all agree they do. Without our active agreement and acceptance, they mean nothing and they will have to adapt to civil pressure or die. Together, we can change them. The powers that be will not like it if we decide to change them, and they will quite probably try to use violence, but try is the operative word here, and if enough people are on the same page, and we can get enough of the people they would use to implement that violence on the same page, it won’t even matter, and the violence probably won’t even happen. Revolution does not have to be violent, it just has to be united. Unite the people, and this can all change. Sure, there will likely be some violence after all, but we have to accept that there already is some, and people are already dying in concentration camps and in wars that are far more pointless than the struggle to take control back of our own futures.

We have ended kingdoms. We have ended slavery. We have ended segregation. We can end this.

The revolution will not be televised – in fact it can’t be. The revolution is taking place at dinner tables, in workplaces, in conversations between real people interacting with other real people on a daily basis talking about how much they hate and are affected by what is happening right now and how much we all want it to change. It doesn’t have a manifesto, it doesn’t have a leader, it’s not scheduled at some date and time, nobody is pulling these strings, and yet I think it will happen just as inevitably as anything as long as people can stay united about the change we want to see in the world. A lot of the masks have been pulled off, and we can now see people and things for what they really are. Dispelling these illusions is painful and frightening, but it’s also necessary for real change to happen.

They’re desperate because they’re losing their grip. It may look like they’re trying to tighten their grip, and they are, but it’s because they’re slipping, so they’re also scrambling, and panicking. Attitudes are shifting and shit is getting bad faster than they were prepared for. Their hubris is catching up to them. Their tech-utopian dreams are now starting to contact and conflict with reality, and reality is going to run them over without even slowing down. Musk and all the rest going so quickly from tens of billions to hundreds of billions to now trillions (in a matter of years!) is not a sign of consolidation of wealth, it’s a sign of the currency they are depending on starting to lose meaningful, realistic value. It’s starting to look like hyperinflation for billionaires, and it’s going to end the same way. Ironically they’ve already gutted and robbed the and tried to automate and replace the middle and working classes so extensively that it’s probably going to shield us from the worst of it. It will be bad, but not as bad as it could be. Additional social support is going to be required on the other side, but we’ll also be able to take advantage of some of the very technologies and cost-cutting measures they’ve been using to replace us.

Yes, let’s intentionally break our glass house by throwing much deserved stones at something else. Once it’s broken, we’ll replace it with a house that isn’t made of glass and doesn’t tolerate the mutilation of children of either gender. This is not about assigning blame or deciding who’s right or wrong, and it’s disingenuous and distracting to try to compare them, maintain your focus on stopping the practices.

Sometimes, yes. When they’re done without consent or emotionally pressured or coerced upon children too young to be capable of informed consent, yes. Consenting adults, fine. Consenting teens or even tweens, fine. Teen who feels socially pressured? No. 5-year-old? No. This is not something that affects your future. This is not something that has some medical or preventive purpose.

Ear piercings may only cause minor pain and have minor infection risks and may not be a serious harm in the great scheme of things, but they set a horrible precedent for consent and bodily autonomy and I find it unconscionable that anyone can defend that unless they are just expressing how normalized it is because of the way it happened to them too. Beauty standards for women are oppressive things that even women tend to unwittingly enforce on each other, and it starts during childhood. It’s not good, it’s not healthy. It’s sick, and it’s malicious, and we need to stop perpetuating it. Let people have the bodies they are born with and accept them as they are, let them decide if or when they want to change it.
