I was not expecting them to respond but I was not expecting my response to be deleted immediately. I was hoping for my response to be available for others to see so they could make an informed decision.

Yeah it’s frustrating because madthumbs (and you too) seem to know what they’re talking about to someone like me who is not an expert, but if madthumbs is not going to allow good-faith discussion, newbies who might consider Linux will only get one side of the story.

Linux is not perfect but the contributors are always trying to make it better and that perspective will always be missing from linuxsucks@lemmy.world.

I propose a new community called linuxsuckssucks@lemmy.world that just copy/pastes the posts from linuxsucks@lemmy.world and allows free discussion.

Agree with you 100%. After posting I read the sidebar and the rules make it very clear that it’s their fiefdom to run as they please and they don’t tolerate good-faith discussion. Such is the freedom of the fediverse. I don’t agree with their way of doing things but I respect that they are free to do so.

Semi-related: I wonder if it would be worthwhile to create a list of communities that most newbies to the fediverse should block from the get-go. Like a sort of a “there be dragons” list of places that most reasonable people would probably want to avoid.

Never confiscated, but apparently sleeved Magic the Gathering cards look like explosives to the TSA. I kept getting “randomly” searched and being late for flights until I finally asked the dude why I kept getting “randomly” flagged for additional screening and he told me. It was also frequently cold when I was traveling and my suitcase was often left in the trunk of a cold car all day while I was at work and that also makes them suspicious of my belongings.

If the TSA had ever prevented a terrorist plot you can be sure they’d be screaming about it at every opportunity.

It depends on the bike and the design of the windscreen. I would say that most are designed to shelter you from the wind first. There might be a slight amount of protection from sand and rocks getting kicked up but most motorcycle windscreens don’t provide the rider with full coverage so you might still get drilled in the helmet by a rock even though the aerodynamics are directing airflow above your helmet.

What I found interesting when I was a new rider is that most windscreens aren’t even designed to be looked through. The rider typically looks over the top of the windscreen. I have ridden some cruisers with giant windscreens that are designed for looking through and they’re very annoying because as soon as a bug splatters on the windscreen there’s no way to clean it without pulling over to bust out a rag and some furniture polish.

I’d say the main benefit of a windscreen is comfort. On the highway it can be very tiring to hold your upper body against the wind without one. It also helps prevent buffeting of the helmet and it reduces noise in the helmet quite a bit so you can hear traffic or your music more easily. The downside of the wind protection is that it reduces airflow at low speeds which sucks when it’s hot as balls outside and you’re sitting on top of a hot engine, catalytic converter, and exhaust. Some fancy bikes like my R1200GS have adjustable height windscreens so you can choose between protection from the wind and rider-cooling airflow.
